This course is designed to expose students to various processes, techniques and methods related to jewelry and metalworking.  Students will develop skills and explore the use of metal materials for personal design, expression and visual problem solving. The class will help close the gap between technical proficiency and personal creativity by combining practical information regarding materials, tools and techniques. The Students will design and develop work with a wide variety of materials including copper, brass, nickel, titanium, silver, steel, wire, and semi-precious stones. The students will develop techniques such as sawing, cold connections, forming, brazing, soldering, welding, casting, machining, forging, sanding, polishing, and various surface treatments.
Grading - Assessments and Grading will be based on:

Weekly Production Online Portfolio Entries – Photos of the student’s work and written responses uploaded to Google Classroom.  The photos can show the progression of work, finished work, and their planning and forethought (often sketches).  The weekly entries will also contain written responses to prompts about the week’s content.  This weekly digital journal will be evidence of the student’s: Use of Time (In the Studio or at Home), Use of Tools and Materials -- this includes the use of their cell phones or other personal technology, and adherence to the Studio Contract and Peer Interaction.

Semester Digital Portfolios – Final digital collection of finished work that shows mastery of each project’s current objective, Proper use of Materials, Creativity and Originality, Craftsmanship, and Connections with Personal Meaning.

Great Rules for Living (author unknown) and in the art studio…..

If you open it, close it.

If you turn in on, turn it off.

If you break it,  admit it.

If you borrow it, return it.

If you value it, take care of it.

If you make a mess, clean it up.

If you take it out, put it back.

If it belongs to someone else, and you want to use it, get permission.

If you do not know how to operate it, leave it alone.

If it will brighten someone’s day, say it.
