Totems

You will be required to create a piece for a class totem, this is your chance to leave your mark on campus. If you would like to see some examples head out the backdoor and checkout the totems from prior years!

Totems have a long history of story telling, they were traditionally carved out of wood in indigenous cultures. The carvings may symbolize or commemorate cultural beliefs that recount familiar legends, clan lineages, or notable events. The poles may also serve as functional architectural features, welcome signs for village visitors, mortuary vessels for the remains of deceased ancestors, or as a means to publicly ridicule someone. Given the complexity and symbolic meanings of totem pole carvings, their placement and importance lies in the observer's knowledge and connection to the meanings of the figures.

Your mission:

You will construct a template in the shape of an I like the 5 examples above.
You will be required to:
Carve in to the piece (Subtractive)
Create Add on's (Additive)
Use Underglazes on Greenware (Colored Slips {Thin Bottles})
Cover the piece with clear glaze after Bisque firing

We also need a topper from each class, let me know if you want to do the topper they will be limited.

Process:
Use the pipe, templates to create your I shaped foundation form.
Remember to keep it loose around the pipe, clay shrinks when it dries.

Score and slip lips so that they rest on each other nicely.
